How to write capital D
- Start at the top line and pull a tall downstroke to the baseline.
- Make a small loop at the foot, then swing a large bowl up the right side back to the top.
- Close the bowl at the top and lift the pen.
How to write lowercase d
- Start just below the midline and swing an oval down to the baseline and back up, closing it at the top.
- Continue up into a tall stem, then retrace down to the baseline.
- Exit with a short upstroke to the right.
Common mistakes
- A common slip is making the stem of d as short as its oval, which turns it into a.
- With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; D ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.
Joining d to other letters
The d exits from the baseline with a short upstroke that becomes the entry stroke of the next letter.
