How to write capital V

  1. Start at the baseline with a small entry loop and rise to the top line.
  2. Pull a downstroke to the baseline.
  3. Rise to the top in a curve and finish with a small hook; V does not join the next letter.

How to write lowercase v

  1. Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
  2. Pull down into a rounded trough and rise again to the midline.
  3. Exit with a short level stroke to the right at the midline.

Common mistakes

  • A common slip is dropping the exit of v to the baseline, so the next letter starts too low and the pair reads as u.
  • With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; V ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.

Joining v to other letters

The v ends at the midline, not the baseline, so the next letter starts from a short level bridge instead of rising from the line. That is why letters look slightly different after v.
