Start with the capital J: a loop that starts at the baseline, rises to the top, drops below the baseline and hooks back to the line. Its tail runs straight into the a, so the pen stays down. The a is an oval closed at the top, then a downstroke on its right side that exits at the baseline; it runs from the baseline straight into the m. The m is three humps drawn from the baseline, each one retracing the last downstroke; it runs from the baseline straight into the e. The e is a small loop drawn from the baseline up through the midline and back down; it runs from the baseline straight into the s. The s is a short upstroke to the midline, then a curve back down to the left that closes on the baseline, and its exit stroke finishes the word.

When the word is finished, go back and dot the j. A common slip in James is leaving s open at the baseline, which turns it into a small r.
