How to write capital R
- Start at the top line and pull a tall downstroke to the baseline.
- Lift, return to the top and draw the bowl round to the midline, closing it against the stem.
- Throw a diagonal leg down to the baseline and end with a tail that joins the next letter.
How to write lowercase r
- Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
- Make a tiny shoulder to the right and pull down to the baseline.
- Exit with a short upstroke to the right.
Common mistakes
- A common slip is skipping the shoulder of r, which turns it into a stray upstroke.
- With the capital, learners stop the final stroke short instead of carrying it into the next letter; the tail of R is the join.
Joining r to other letters
The r exits from the baseline with a short upstroke that becomes the entry stroke of the next letter.
