Start at the baseline with a small entry stroke and rise to the top line.
Pull down into a rounded trough and rise again to the top.
Pull a downstroke below the baseline, loop back up and end with a tail that joins the next letter.

Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
Pull down into a rounded trough, rise again, then pull a downstroke below the baseline.
Loop back to the left, cross at the baseline and exit to the right.

A common slip is leaving the lower loop of y open, which turns it into a tall v with a tail.
With the capital, learners stop the final stroke short instead of carrying it into the next letter; the tail of Y is the join.

The y ends in a loop below the baseline. The loop closes on the way up and its tail runs into the next letter from the baseline.
