How to write capital Z

  1. Start at the top line with a curved cap stroke to the right.
  2. Pull a diagonal down to the baseline.
  3. Loop below the baseline and end with a tail that joins the next letter.

How to write lowercase z

  1. Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
  2. Make a small hump and pull a diagonal to a point on the baseline.
  3. Loop below the baseline, return to the line and exit to the right.

Common mistakes

  • A common slip is skipping the point at the baseline of z, which turns it into a loose g.
  • With the capital, learners stop the final stroke short instead of carrying it into the next letter; the tail of Z is the join.

Joining z to other letters

The z ends in a loop below the baseline. The loop closes on the way up and its tail runs into the next letter from the baseline.
