How to write capital O

  1. Start just below the top line and draw a large oval down to the baseline and back up.
  2. Close the oval at the top with a small loop.
  3. Lift the pen; O does not join the next letter.

How to write lowercase o

  1. Start just below the midline and swing an oval down to the baseline and back up.
  2. Close the oval at the top.
  3. Exit with a short level stroke to the right at the midline.

Common mistakes

  • A common slip is closing o at the baseline instead of the top, which leaves no exit stroke and breaks the join.
  • With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; O ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.

Joining o to other letters

The o ends at the midline, not the baseline, so the next letter starts from a short level bridge instead of rising from the line. That is why letters look slightly different after o.
