How to write capital W

  1. Start at the baseline with a small entry stroke and rise to the top line.
  2. Draw two rounded troughs down to the baseline and up again without lifting.
  3. Finish with a small hook at the top; W does not join the next letter.

How to write lowercase w

  1. Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
  2. Draw two rounded troughs without lifting the pen.
  3. Exit with a short level stroke to the right at the midline.

Common mistakes

  • A common slip is making the middle of w as tall as its sides, so it reads as two u's.
  • With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; W ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.

Joining w to other letters

The w ends at the midline, not the baseline, so the next letter starts from a short level bridge instead of rising from the line. That is why letters look slightly different after w.
