How to write capital I

  1. Start at the baseline and sweep up into a tall loop to the top line.
  2. Come back down the loop and cross it near the baseline.
  3. Finish with a curve to the left along the baseline.

How to write lowercase i

  1. Start at the baseline and rise to the midline.
  2. Retrace down to the baseline and exit to the right.
  3. Dot the i after finishing the word.

Common mistakes

  • A common slip is placing the dot of i far to the right, over the next letter.
  • With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; I ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.

Joining i to other letters

The i exits from the baseline with a short upstroke that becomes the entry stroke of the next letter.
