How to write capital Q
- Start just below the top line and draw a large oval down to the baseline.
- At the bottom, make a small loop and draw a short foot along the baseline to the right.
- Lift the pen; Q does not join the next letter.
How to write lowercase q
- Start just below the midline and swing an oval down to the baseline and back up, closing it at the top.
- Pull a downstroke below the baseline and make a small loop to the right.
- Return to the baseline and exit to the right.
Common mistakes
- A common slip is curling the tail of q to the left like g, which turns it into g.
- With the capital, learners try to join it to the next letter; Q ends with a stroke that stops, so lift the pen and start the next letter fresh.
Joining q to other letters
The q ends in a loop below the baseline. The loop closes on the way up and its tail runs into the next letter from the baseline.
